Dear Friends,

It is with pleasure that our office introduce this newsletter, a communication tool designed to keep you up to date, as well as continue our work in the educational advancement of all too often undetected visual dysfunctions.

Dr. Kaplan’s work in behavioral optometry began in the 1960’s when autism was mis-viewed as a condition of bad parenting and early emotional trauma. His ideas created a paradigm shift into the realm of neuroplasticity. He learned by observing his patients and listening to their feedback. He knew there were physiological components he could not disregard if he was to solve their disorders and to date, he holds true to his mantra that “symptoms are not the problem, but rather the solution.” His model is based on the development of mind, body and world--- inherent and environmentally constructed spheres of influence which come to explain our behaviors and personalities with such precision. Why do so many children view their world peripherally? Why are some better at reading and others at math? Why do some individuals take to sports? What causes anxiety in a person previously known as the ‘social butterfly?’

“What we learn from experience, we can change through experience” and thus the goal of Dr. Kaplan’s visual management program--- to be more efficient in an appropriate amount of time. This gives us excitement but more importantly allows us the opportunity to work on your well-being and the goals you set for yourself or your child.

We look forward to sharing with you our current developments via this newsletter, which will be available on our website, as well as on the front counter in the office area. I encourage your feedback and would love to hear your questions. Please send them to cvmbarbara@aol.com. You may even find your answer in our next newsletter!

Sincerely,

Barbara Kotsamanidis, MSE
